How To Choose A Crossbow

Before getting into the CenterPoint crossbow reviews, let’s see what our experts say about how to choose a crossbow. To get the best thing, anyone should know the crossbow selection method from different angles.

Note: If you are a professional you can skip this part and jump into the CenterPoint crossbow reviews.

Most crossbows have a stock and a bow that fit together to make a crossbow. In that sense, all crossbows are the same. But the main difference is the way the crossbow is set up. In that regard, there are mainly three types of crossbows- recurve, compound, and reverse draw.

Typical Crossbow

The typical recurve crossbows are pretty hard to maneuver in situations because of their greater width. However, this problem is now being sorted out by using shorter limbs. The biggest issue with this kind of bow is broken strings. But the good thing is you can easily replace the string yourself, anywhere.

Compound Crossbow

Compound crossbows are more complicated functioning crossbows. With different settings containing cables and pulleys like their vertical compatriots. The compound crossbows can be built longer and narrower to increase both speed and kinetic energy. It may be heavier and louder compared to the recurve crossbow and if the string is broken you have to take it back to the shop or send it back to the company to repair it unless you are experienced with it.

Reverse Draw Crossbow

The reverse draw crossbow is a new member of the crossbow family. It is a quitter and but is also pretty heavy. With the reverse draw crossbow, you’ll be able to get an arrow speed of 300 FPS. Consider its draw weight is on about 100lbs it’s pretty impressive.

Arrow Speed

The next thing you should consider is the arrow speed. Modern crossbows have an arrow speed anywhere between 265 to 400 FPS. The crossbows with lower arrow speed are good for still targets. But when you are hunting whitetail deer the target is anything but still. So that’s why hunters prefer using a higher FPS crossbow.

Draw Weight

The next part is the draw weight. Nowadays the crossbows have a draw weight of 90lbs to 260lbs with an average draw weight of 165lbs. You should buy the crossbow that you feel comfortable drawing back. But you can also use crank cocking devices to lighten the load when comes to cocking the bow.

Arrow Length

Along with the crossbow itself, you also need to pay attention to what accessories you use with it. It is important to buy the arrow of the right length. Because if you use an arrow that is too light it may trigger dry firing and cause some serious damage to your crossbow.

Crossbow Broadhead

There are various types of crossbow broadheads for various types of crossbows. When you choose broadheads, broadheads made for crossbows are also highly recommended. Heavier broadheads help the arrow flight and make it fly better. 150 grains is the weight suggested but you can find broadheads up to 170 grains.

Crossbow Scopes

A good crossbow scope is important while hunting with a crossbow. There’s a large variety of optics you can pick from. You don’t need an optic that magnifies too much but a little can be super beneficial for hunting.

Personal need

Most importantly, consider your own need when you buy a crossbow. Buy the one that you think is perfect for you. And if you’re not buying online but from a store then pick up some crossbows and shoot once. Then you’ll find the perfect bow for yourself.

In this part of the CenterPoint crossbow reviews, we will be reviewing the five top-tier crossbows of CenterPoint. Remember one thing, don’t miss any part of the CenterPoint crossbow reviews, just stick to it till the end to know a lot about CenterPoint crossbows.

CenterPoint Tormentor Whisper 380 Crossbow

CenterPoint Tormentor Whisper 380

CenterPoint Tormentor Whisper 380 Review In-Depth

The CenterPoint tormentor whisper 380 has a very compact design. It features an aluminum riser. Moreover, its quad limbs are made of fiberglass composite as well so it is very strong and durable. The rear stock features a rubber grip and cheekpiece which is comfortable and very firm and also ensures good grip on the crossbow in any kind of weather. Its CNC machined cams provide a faster and more accurate arrow delivery.

Weight and Length

The CenterPoint crossbow Tormentor Whisper 380 features an aluminum body which makes it very light and sturdy at the same time. But there is a small downgrade, too. When you equip all the accessories the crossbow can get a little heavier than you might like. Other than that, the weight is not something you need to bother about.

It has a standard length of 33 inches. So there is nothing too special about the length. The Whisper 380 has an axle-to-axle width of 14” when fully cocked.

It comes with three 20 inch carbon arrows and these arrows are recommended to use with the Tormentor Whisper 380 crossbows. We would suggest you use it in a 60 yards range if you are on a hunting trip. It will confirm a humanly kill on your prey. But if you are just doing some target practice you can try out different ranges. But still, if it’s too far out it can damage your arrows.

Arrow Speed

Like most other crossbows the tormentor’s name also suggests its arrow speed which is 380 fps. It is pretty fast for a crossbow of this price. Of course, it’s not as fast as other very expensive alternatives, but it is still very fast.

The CenterPoint Tormentor Whisper 380 crossbow comes with a 3x32mm not illuminated scope. Which is not the best thing about the crossbow. And I think it’s safe to say it is pretty awful. So if you have not exceeded your budget then you might wanna buy a different scope. We recommend the UTG 4x32mm 1” scope. It provides multi reticles and can be pretty good for all ranges.

The package provides you with a rope cocker. It is cheap but it cocks the string pretty smooth and cleanly.

Now let’s talk about the most hyped aspect of this CenterPoint crossbow 380, which is its trigger. Firstly, it features the traditional anti-dry firing mechanism and auto-trigger safety, which is nothing too extraordinary. But the Whisper Silencing Feature is what steals the show. It makes this crossbow one of the quietest if not the quietest crossbow in the world. The whisper silencer has 2 string stoppers, 2 limb dampeners, and 2 spider silencers.

It is an affordable replacement for the Ravin crossbows. The license for the famous HeliCoil technology from Ravin crossbow was bought by CenterPoint, so they can now use it in their crossbows.

It is a great affordable crossbow among all of our CenterPoint crossbow reviews. So let’s get into the CenterPoint CP400 review.

CenterPoint Archery CP400

CenterPoint CP400 Review In-Depth

Weight and Length

The CenterPoint CP400 is made with aluminum which makes it very light and comfortable. It only weighs about 7.8 pounds. It also has an adjustable rear stock which is made of light but very firm composites. The stock allows you to adjust perfectly according to your arm length.

The CenterPoint CP400 is one of the most compact crossbows to ever have been released. It measures about 31.75 inches in length. It is 10.5 inches in width when uncocked and 6 inches when cocked.

CenterPoint recommends you use the 20 inches carbon arrows that come with the crossbow to fully take advantage of the CP400’s accuracy and power. The arrow comes with 4 inches bane and Halfmoon nocks assembled.

Arrow Speed

As the name suggests the CenterPoint CP400 shoots arrows at a speed of 400 fps. The CP400 features the HeliCoil technology as we mentioned earlier and thanks to this feature it can fire arrows at a very high speed with greater accuracy. It’s really nice to get this good of a feature in such an affordable range.

The CP400 features a 3x32mm illuminated scope which is really good among CenterPoint crossbow scopes. It is not only a 3 dot sight, but it also has multiple reticles for dependable placements when you need it most. It has aim points from 20 to 100 yards going up by 10 yards each time.

The CenterPoint CP400 crossbow comes with a rope cocking device which feels pretty cheap to be totally honest. But works pretty well. The crossbow has a draw weight of 200 pounds but using the rope cocking device you can reduce the amount up to 100 pounds. It cocks the string pretty smoothly.

And another great news is CenterPoint is releasing CP400™ Power Draw Rope Cocking Device. They said on their official website that is coming out soon.

CenterPoint did not upgrade the trigger for the CenterPoint CP400 crossbow. For that reason, it has some creep and it breaks at about 7 lbs. Earlier models have the same problem. The bad news is someone from CrossbowNation found out that the trigger will not be fixed or upgraded. It looks like CenterPoint is not willing or unable to upgrade the trigger.

But the good thing is that it still has some awesome safety features. It features an anti-dry firing mechanism and automatic safety. Which prevents you from accidental dry fires.

The assembly of the crossbow is pretty easy. You just gotta install the foot stirrup with a bolt and make sure the screws are properly tightened. Then you can install the quiver on the side of the crossbow and then install the scope to finish assembling.

CenterPoint Crossbow Review - Sniper 370

CenterPoint Sniper 370 Review In-Depth

The CenterPoint Sniper 370 crossbow features quad limbs that are made of compressed fiberglass to ensure durability and firmness. The limbs also feature a precision cams system to deliver more power and accuracy. It has a fully adjustable stock and foregrip to ensure a customized fit for the shoulder.

Weight and length

The crossbow is made of aluminum and composite allowing it to be durable and lightweight at the same time. It weighs about 7.9 lbs.

The CenterPoint Sniper 370 crossbow measures full lengths of 40 inches uncocked and 18 inches when cocked.

The crossbow comes with good quality carbon arrows which measure a length of 20”. The weighs about 275 grains when they come with 100-grain field tips. But it’s not the best arrow for hunting. It also comes with a side-mounted quiver that can hold up to four arrows.

Arrow speed

The Sniper 370 crossbow has a draw weight of 185 lbs and a power stroke of 13.5 inches. The crossbow delivers an arrow speeds up to 370 fps. Which is pretty good for hunting from a long distance.

It comes with a 4x32mm multi reticle scope, which is a pretty high-quality budget scope that features crosshair and circle reticles that come in red and green colors. Its calibration is set up for up to 40 yards. It has five levels of brightness setting that allows you to hunt day and night.

The draw weight of 185 lbs can be a bit too much for the hunter who has a short and small body built. But the CenterPoint crossbow comes with a cocking device that allows you to reduce the draw weight up to 50% and make it 92.5 lbs.

The trigger has a lot of creeps which makes it difficult to take shots quickly. But the upside of this is that it prevents premature firing.

The trigger comes with some good safety features. It has an ambidextrous safety switch and an anti-dry firing inhibitor that prevents accidental dry fires.

Despite being easy to assemble the sniper 370 crossbow’s user manual that comes with the package is very vague. If you never assembled a crossbow before we’ll recommend you to let someone experienced do it for you.

CenterPoint Mercenary 370 Crossbow

In the last part of the CenterPoint crossbow reviews, we are going to talk about another top-tier crossbow from CenterPoint. CenterPoint Mercenary 370 is a very comfortable, lightweight, and affordable crossbow. It’s a rope cock model from CenterPoint which is not there in most crossbows. It is a great option to extend your crossbow collection. The reason for it being a great bow is the fact that it is very affordable and comes with a lot of great features. Now let’s get into the review.

CenterPoint Mercenary 370 Review In-Depth

The CenterPoint Mercenary 370 has a very slick body construction. It also has AR-style rear stock which is fully adjustable. It features Noise Suppressing sting stoppers which reduces the string noise.

Weight and Length

The crossbow is about 6.7 pounds in weight which is very light compared to most other crossbows. It is super versatile and easy to maneuver.

It has a length of 32.6 inches, which is standard for most of the crossbows on the planet.

There are 3 20 inches of carbon arrows. These arrows weigh about 290 grains which are a bit heavy but you have to consider that if the arrow is too light it may not travel as fast, even if it does it takes a lot of force and draw weight.

Arrow Speed

The mercenary 370 fires arrows at a speed of 370 fps which is very obvious considering its name. It’s not as fast as let’s say the CP400 but you have to notice the price difference as well.

It comes with a 4x32mm illuminated scope in the package. This scope works wonderfully with the crossbow. Especially in the 60-yard range. It is the best scope to cope with the Mercenary 370 crossbow.

The Mercenary 370 crossbow comes with a rope cocking device in the package. It is pretty good and does a good job in cocking the string.

The crossbow comes with some safety features. It does not let dry fire happen due to its anti-dry firing mechanism which prevents dry fires. It has automatic trigger safety and noise-canceling string stoppers. So you are getting a lot of features in a bow that’s not really known for its high price tag.

The crossbow comes mostly assembled, you just need to fit the crossbow into the stock. Even the scope comes assembled. So assembly difficulty -12/10 for me.

  • Anti-Dry firing mechanism
  • Noise-canceling string stoppers

CenterPoint Sniper Elite 385 Review In-Depth

The CenterPoint sniper elite 385 is made with a new MIL-SPEC AR styled adjustable rear stock for a custom fit. Its forearm is adjustable, too. There is a cheekpiece on the buttstock that you can adjust to aid in eye alignment with the scope.

The main difference between the sniper 370 and the sniper elite 385 is the diameter of the tube where the stock slides into. Its diameter is almost two-hundredths of an inch smaller than the sniper 370 crossbows.

Weight and Length

The CenterPoint is made with aluminum and because of that it only weighs about 7.9 lbs. It’s a very easy maneuver and it is also very durable and strong.

The CenterPoint sniper elite 385 is more compact than the previous one. It has an overall length of about 33.75 inches and an axle-to-axle width of 18.75 when uncocked and 14.75 when fully cocked.

This crossbow comes with a 20” carbon arrow which is good for target practice but is not recommended to hunt with.

It comes with the quick detach parallel quiver which provides secure arrow storage whilst maintaining a slim profile.

Arrow Speed

The sniper elite 985 is versatile which means it is suitable for both target practice and also hunting. It is very fast and also accurate. CenterPoint Sniper Elite has buck-stopping power. It shoots arrows at speed of 385 fps with an energy of 131.5 fps.

CenterPoint Sniper Elite 380 has the same 4×32 mm multi reticle scope as the sniper 370 crossbows. It is adjustable and it is also pretty accurate. It has five levels of brightness to help you hunt efficiently day and night.

The sniper elite 385 comes with a rope cocking device. Using this device you can reduce the draw weight up to 50% and make it 92.5 lbs. It also has a nice stirrup which offers you a secure point of attachment when you are hunting from an elevated position.

This crossbow is also compatible with the crank cocking device. It lets you reduce the cranking effort by 70 percent.

The sniper 370 trigger had too much creep and that’s why CenterPoint has improved their trigger for the new sniper elite 385 crossbow which offers you a very smooth and clean trigger pull without any creep.

The trigger contains an auto anti-dry firing tech that prevents dry firing from happening.

The CenterPoint Sniper Elite 385 crossbow is very easy to assemble thanks to the fact that it has a single bolt assembly design. You just need to attach a single bolt riser attachment mount to the rail and you are ready to go.

Which is the best CenterPoint crossbow?

We already mentioned that all of the CenterPoint crossbows are good. But if you ask for the best one, we would tell you CenterPoint CP400.

How much a crossbow last?

None can tell it exactly. It totally depends on how carefully you are using it. But the main factor is crossbow string which can determine how long it will last. If you maintain it better it will last 3 to 5 years.

How much fps does a crossbow require to hunt a deer?

Well, it’s hard to say that, which distance we will see a deer while bow hunting. But in general, a crossbow with 300fps can kill an animal like a deer. This initial speed can give your arrow enough Kinetic Energy to hit from a decent distance.

In this case, try to keep a rangefinder for bowhunting. It will help you to measure the distance of your target.
